Middle and Upper Class Kids in Danger of OxyContin Addiction

November 10, 2008

A recent news story about teens taking OxyContin and heroin. It quotes a mother as saying “”I don’t think twice about searching his room,” says Steven’s mom, “I don’t think twice about getting on the house phone or the cell phone and seeing who he’s called or who’s called him. I don’t think twice about getting on his MySpace and looking and reading his messages.” That’s because she knows his drug problem – OxyContin addiction – is so severe he’s going to die.  And this guy’s a nice kid, from a nice surburban home.

The news article says middle class and upper middle class kids are the perfect target for dealers of OxyContin because they have money – and it can cost up to $80 for each pill, which means they develop a habit that costs hundreds of dollars every day.

But, eventually, the money runs out. Which is when they turn to heroin. Heroin costs $10. Big difference. And OxyContin is nothing more than legal heroin so, really, there’s no difference, heroin’s just cheaper.

One of the kids said he could find a way around any drug test in school – even surprises. Since most of the school drug tests don’t test for prescription drugs so it’s not much of a problem for anyone.

Parents have to forget about their kid’s privacy if they want to keep them alive.  When my own son was taking drugs we found out when his father listened in, my mistake, on a phone call. We found out fast, and we were able to help him. God knows what would have happened if we hadn’t found out when we did. Don’t hesitate to do the same. And don’t mess with it if you find out something’s going on. No matter how recently they’ve started, get them into an addiction treatment center that will get down to the bottom of why they’re taking drugs.
